Build a website for Ksh. 500

TL;DR: Quick Summary

You can launch a clean, AI-generated website in Kenya for as little as KES 500 (roughly the cost of a first-year domain). Have Claude write the code, buy a domain on Spaceship, host it free on Cloudflare Pages, and add free business email with Zoho Mail. It’s a brilliant way to test an idea, but a DIY site rarely brings in clients on its own. If you want a website built to rank and convert, see our website design services in Nairobi.

Launching a website in Kenya no longer needs a big development budget. With an AI model like Claude writing clean HTML and CSS, and free infrastructure like Cloudflare Pages serving static files worldwide, you can put a professional-looking site online for the price of a domain, sometimes as low as KES 500 a year. Whether you’re in Nairobi, Mombasa, Kisumu or anywhere else, the process is the same.

Below is the exact playbook, who it suits, where it falls short, and how to tell when it’s time to bring in a professional. Not sponsored: none of the tools mentioned here are affiliate links, and we earn nothing if you use them.

How to Build a Website for KES 500: The 3-Step Playbook

Step 1: Build the site with Claude

Claude is very good at front-end code. Instead of wrestling with page builders, you describe what you want and get a complete, responsive page back.

  • The prompt: Give Claude a clear brief, for example: “Write a single-file, production-ready HTML and Tailwind CSS landing page for a Nairobi-based consultancy. Include a hero section, services list, testimonials, and a contact section. Keep the design clean, modern, and mobile-responsive.”
  • The result: Claude returns the code. Save it as index.html, open it in any browser to preview, then ask Claude to change colours, fix layouts or rewrite copy until it looks right.
  • Tip: Include your real business name, services, location, phone number and WhatsApp link in the prompt. Generic placeholder text is the fastest way to make an AI site look generic.

Step 2: Buy a domain (from about KES 500)

You only need to buy a domain name, such as yourcompany.com. We use and recommend Spaceship because first-year promotional prices are often very low, sometimes around $1 to $4 (roughly KES 130 to KES 500). This is our honest recommendation, not a sponsored one.

Know the renewal price. Promotional first-year prices don’t last. From year two, a .com typically renews at the regular price, which is noticeably higher than the promo. Always check the renewal cost before you check out, and remember that exchange rates move, so the KES figures here are approximate.

What about a .co.ke domain? Many Kenyan businesses prefer a .co.ke because it signals a local presence. These are registered through Kenyan accredited registrars rather than Spaceship, and usually cost more than a promotional .com. A .com is fine for most businesses, and works well if you want to reach customers outside Kenya too.

Step 3: Host for free on Cloudflare Pages, with free email from Zoho

Once you have your code and domain, here is the full sequence:

  1. Put your code on GitHub. Create a free GitHub account, make a new repository, and upload your index.html (plus any images or CSS files).
  2. Create a Cloudflare Pages project. In a free Cloudflare account, go to Workers & Pages, create a Pages project, and connect your GitHub repository.
  3. Set the build options. For a plain HTML site, leave the framework as “None” and the build command empty. Deploy, and Cloudflare gives you a free .pages.dev address immediately.
  4. Add your custom domain. In the project’s Custom domains tab, add your domain. If you bought it at Spaceship, Cloudflare will ask you to point your nameservers to Cloudflare. Update them in your Spaceship dashboard.
  5. Set up business email. Sign up for Zoho Mail’s Forever Free plan, verify your domain, then add the MX, SPF and DKIM records Zoho gives you into your Cloudflare DNS settings. You’ll then have an address like hello@yourcompany.com.

Cloudflare Pages includes free HTTPS and global content delivery, so the site loads quickly for visitors in Kenya and abroad. Zoho’s free plan covers up to five users with 5 GB of storage each and a 25 MB attachment limit.

Zoho free plan limits to know about: It works through webmail and Zoho’s mobile apps, but it does not include IMAP, POP or ActiveSync, so you can’t connect it to Outlook, Gmail or Apple Mail. It also covers one domain. Check Zoho’s current plan page before you commit. Paid plans start at around KES 90 per user per month (billed annually) if you outgrow it.

Compare business email in Kenya: Zoho Mail, Google Workspace and Microsoft 365.

How Much Does a Website in Kenya Cost with This Method?

Estimated First-Year Website Costs in Kenya (AI + Free Infrastructure)
Item Tool Approx. cost (year 1)
Website code Claude KES 0 on a free account (usage limits apply)
Domain name Spaceship About KES 130 to KES 500 (promo price)
Hosting + SSL Cloudflare Pages KES 0
Business email Zoho Mail (Forever Free) KES 0
Total About KES 130 to KES 500

From year two, expect to pay your domain’s regular renewal price instead of the promo rate. Prices and exchange rates change, so confirm current figures at checkout.

Who Should Build a Cheap Website with AI?

This approach works well for:

  • Validating an idea: Entrepreneurs testing a new concept who want to see if there’s demand before spending serious money.
  • Solo founders and freelancers: People who need a digital business card or simple portfolio online this week.
  • Tech-curious builders: Anyone comfortable with code snippets, DNS settings and a bit of troubleshooting.

The Limits of a Free, AI-Built Website

A KES 500 launch is real, but a static AI-generated site has clear limitations:

  • No dynamic backend. Cloudflare Pages serves static files. Customer logins, online checkout, booking systems and client dashboards need more than a basic HTML page.
  • Contact forms need extra setup. A static site can’t process form submissions by itself. You’ll need a form service such as Formspree or Web3Forms, or a Cloudflare Worker, to receive messages.
  • You become the support team. If a form breaks, a mobile layout misbehaves or a DNS record is wrong, fixing it is on you.
  • AI gives you a layout, not a strategy. Claude writes code from your prompt. It doesn’t know your buyers, your competitors or how people in your market search and decide.

When a DIY AI Website Starts Costing You More

The purpose of a business website isn’t just to exist online. It’s to bring in enquiries and customers. A free site that doesn’t do that has a cost of its own, even if the invoice says KES 0.

The pattern we see is business owners spending weeks prompting AI, fixing mobile layouts and piecing free tools together, and ending up with a site that:

  • Looks generic because it follows standard AI output patterns;
  • Lacks the SEO foundations (page structure, metadata, local keywords, speed tuning) that help people in Nairobi or elsewhere in Kenya find it on Google;
  • Doesn’t guide visitors towards calling, messaging or buying, because the user journey was never planned.

The real expense isn’t the KES 500 domain. It’s the time you spend acting as your own web developer, and the enquiries you may miss while the site isn’t working hard enough for you.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does it cost to build a website in Kenya?

With the AI and free-hosting method in this guide, a basic website can cost as little as KES 500 in the first year, covering just the domain. Professionally designed business websites cost more because they include strategy, design, SEO and ongoing support.

Can I really host a website for free on Cloudflare Pages?

Yes. Cloudflare Pages has a free plan for static websites, including free HTTPS and fast global delivery. Free plans have usage limits, so check Cloudflare’s current terms if you expect heavy traffic.

Is Zoho Mail free for business email?

Zoho Mail offers a Forever Free plan for up to five users on one custom domain, with 5 GB of storage per user. It works through webmail and Zoho’s mobile apps, but doesn’t include IMAP or POP, so you can’t use it with desktop email programs like Outlook.

Can I build a website with Claude if I can’t code?

Yes. You describe the site in plain English and Claude writes the code. You’ll still need to follow the steps to upload it to GitHub and connect your domain, which is straightforward but does involve some technical comfort.

Do I need a .co.ke domain, or is .com fine?

A .com works for most businesses and is easy to buy cheaply. A .co.ke can build trust with local customers and is registered through Kenyan accredited registrars. Choose based on who your customers are.

Can I sell products on a free static website?

Not directly. A static site can’t run a full shopping cart and checkout by itself. You can link to payment links or third-party checkout tools, but a proper online store needs a platform designed for e-commerce.
