Connecting Claude to Gmail and Google Workspace

Claude can search your Gmail, summarise long threads and draft replies once you connect it to your Google account. Setup takes about a minute for an individual and a few more for a Workspace organization. This guide covers the steps, the admin approval, what Claude can and cannot do, and fixes.

TL;DR: Quick Summary

Go to Customize > Connectors, find Gmail, click Connect and approve the Google permissions. On Team and Enterprise plans, a Claude Owner must enable the Google connectors first. If your Google Workspace blocks third-party apps, an admin marks Claude as Trusted. Claude can read, search, draft, send, reply and forward, but sending needs your approval by default. Need Workspace itself? See Studio6’s business email setup and support.

Status note: this guide follows Anthropic’s documentation as of 4 November 2026. Menus change, so check the official Google Workspace connectors article if a screen looks different.

What the Claude Gmail Connector Does

Anthropic offers three Google connectors: Gmail, Google Calendar and Google Drive. Claude accesses only the Google account you connect, only when you ask, and it mirrors your existing Google permissions and sharing settings.

What each Google connector lets Claude do
Connector Read Write
Gmail Search and read email with natural language, read metadata, manage labels and threads, list saved drafts Draft, send, reply to and forward email (approval required by default)
Google Calendar View events and calendars, including shared ones, find mutual availability, see attendees Create, update and delete events, manage attendees, respond to invitations, set up recurring meetings
Google Drive Search Docs, preview files, read Sheets, Slides, PDFs, images and Office files, view permissions Upload files, create folders, share, move and trash files (approval required by default)

Separate Docs, Sheets and Slides connectors let Claude edit those files live in a pane beside the chat, on Claude for web in Chrome and on Claude Desktop.

Before You Start

  • A Google account. Personal Gmail and Google Workspace accounts both use the same sign-in.
  • On Team and Enterprise plans, a Claude Owner or Primary Owner who can enable the connectors for the organization.
  • For Workspace organizations that restrict third-party apps, a Google Workspace administrator.

Plan availability differs between Anthropic’s pages: the help centre lists the Google connectors as available to all users, while the Gmail connector docs list Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise. If Gmail does not appear in your list, check your plan.

Who does what when connecting Claude to Gmail
Role What they do Where
Claude organization Owner Enables the Google connectors for the team (Team and Enterprise only) Organization settings > Connectors
Google Workspace administrator Marks Claude as Trusted, only if third-party apps are blocked admin.google.com
Each user Connects their own Google account Customize > Connectors

Step 1: Enable the Connectors in Claude (Team and Enterprise Only)

Individual users skip this step. On Team and Enterprise plans:

  1. Sign in to Claude as an Owner or Primary Owner.
  2. Go to Organization settings > Connectors.
  3. Enable the Google Workspace connectors you want, such as Gmail, Google Calendar and Google Drive.
  4. Decide whether members can run send, reply, forward, share, move and trash actions without approving each time. Leaving approval on is the safer default.

Step 2: Approve Claude in Google Workspace (If Blocked)

Many organizations need nothing here. If a user sees Access blocked: your institution’s admin needs to review Claude for Google Drive, a Google Workspace administrator must trust the app:

  1. Go to admin.google.com.
  2. Open Security > Access and data control > API controls > Manage third-party app access.
  3. Click Add app and select OAuth App Name.
  4. Search for Claude and set it to Trusted.
  5. Wait about 15 minutes for the change to propagate, then retry.

The same approval covers live editing in Docs, Sheets and Slides, because they use the same Claude for Google Drive app.

Step 3: Connect Your Gmail Account

  1. In Claude, go to Customize > Connectors.
  2. Find Gmail and click Connect.
  3. Sign in to your Google account and grant the requested permissions.

The permission screen mentions email sending, which is how drafting and sending work. Repeat for Google Calendar and Google Drive if you want them. You can also switch a connector on or off inside any chat: click the plus sign, hover over Connectors and toggle it. See Anthropic’s Gmail integration page for the Gmail walkthrough.

Try Claude With Gmail

Ask a question that needs your email. Claude detects when it should search and cites the emails it used, with links back to the originals. Examples:

  • What did Sarah say about the project deadline?
  • Find emails about the Q4 budget review.
  • Summarize my conversation with the sales team last week.
  • Draft a reply to the latest email from the supplier.

You can follow up to find related threads or dig into a long conversation. When Claude sends, replies or forwards, expect an approval prompt unless your Owner turned that off.

What Claude Cannot Do in Gmail

  • Read attachment content. Claude sees attachment metadata only.
  • See embedded images inside emails.
  • Search what you cannot access. Only emails your account can open are searchable.
  • Handle every advanced filter or huge mailbox quickly. Rate limits follow Google’s API quotas, and complex queries may take several calls.

If you ask for a result that depends on an attachment, open the file yourself or paste the relevant text into the chat.

Troubleshooting

Common problems when connecting Claude to Gmail and how to fix them
Problem What to check
“Access blocked: your institution’s admin needs to review” Your Workspace blocks third-party apps. Ask an administrator to set Claude to Trusted (Step 2) and wait about 15 minutes.
“You may need to reconnect with your Google Drive account” Go to Customize > Connectors, select the Google connector, click Disconnect, confirm, then sign in again the next time you use it.
Reconnecting does not fix it Open myaccount.google.com/connections, find the Claude connection and choose Delete all connections. Then connect again.
Gmail missing from the list On Team and Enterprise, an Owner has not enabled it yet. Otherwise check your plan.
Wrong Google account in the pane Claude tells you about the mismatch and offers to switch accounts.

Security and Privacy

  • You sign in directly with Google. Claude does not see your password.
  • Access follows your permissions. Claude cannot open anything your account cannot.
  • Data is tied to the chat. Retrieved data is encrypted in transit and at rest, and deleting the chat deletes it.
  • Keep approvals on. Approving each send, share and trash action prevents mistakes with real consequences.
  • Revoke any time. Disconnect in Claude, or remove the connection at myaccount.google.com/connections.

Details are in Anthropic’s help centre article and its Trust Center.

How Studio6 Can Help

If your business still runs email on a cPanel host, connecting Claude is a second step. Frequently Asked Questions

Can Claude connect to Gmail?

Yes. Claude connects to Gmail through its Google Workspace connectors, which also cover Google Calendar and Google Drive. Claude can then search your email, summarise threads and draft replies.

Does it work with a personal Gmail account?

Yes. You sign in with your Google account and approve the permissions. Anthropic’s help centre only describes an administrator step for organizations that restrict third-party apps, so a personal account needs no admin.

Do I need a Google Workspace administrator?

Only if your organization blocks third-party apps. If you see “Access blocked: your institution’s admin needs to review Claude for Google Drive”, a Workspace admin must mark Claude as Trusted in the Admin console.

Can Claude send emails from Gmail?

Yes, it can draft, send, reply to and forward emails. Sending, replying and forwarding need your approval by default, and on Team and Enterprise plans an Owner decides whether members can skip that approval.

Can Claude read email attachments?

No. Claude sees attachment metadata only, such as the file name. It cannot read attachment content, and it cannot see images embedded in emails.

Is my Gmail data used to train Claude?

Anthropic states that it does not train models on Gmail, Drive or Calendar connector data. There is one exception for consumer accounts: if you opted in to training on your chats, content you copy from these connectors, or responses containing connector information, may be used.
